GDx Access Nerve Fiber Analyzer Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer
In glaucoma we get visual fields changes that correspond to the nerve damage caused by increased eye pressure.  The "gold standard" for measuring the visual field changes has been the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer.

A visual fields test is a "subjective measure" of the changes due to glaucoma.

We have just purchased the new updated model of the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer.
The GDx Access instrument measures the thickness of nerve fiber layer with a scanning laser.  In glaucoma, the retinal nerve fiber layer loses thickness because of nerve damage due to the eye pressure.

It is estimated that about half of the retinal nerve fiber is lost before a visual field defect from glaucoma can be measured.

With this new technology we have an "objective" way to measure eye changes due to glaucoma.  Also, it helps to diagnosis glaucoma at an earlier stage.
Humphrey FDT Visual Field Instrument

With our new instrument, the "standard threshold program" basically measure the threshold visual fields in the same way, but it takes about one half the time to complete the test.  Because the new program takes about half the time to complete, the fatigue factor is less; therefore, generally the results are more accurate.

In addition, our new instrument has a new program called "SWAP Program" which uses blue light on a yellow background to test the visual fields testing.  This type of testing is more accurate in detecting "early" glaucoma.
This new technology is used to screen for any visual field defect.  We do this test on all patients scheduled for a comprehensive eye examination.  This new instrument is estimated to be 99% accurate in detecting a visual field defect. The new "SWAP Program", (blue on yellow light technology) is better for "early detection" of glaucoma, while the "standard threshold" program is used for following patients with established glaucoma.
